About This Image

Vase belonging to Rawdon Hoare, which he took to England, pen-and-ink by Dorothy Popenoe, October 1927, HI Archives Popenoe Family collection no. 204. Found somewhere near Comayague, it belongs very distinctly to Byron Gordon's Group A. The drawing is given three-quarters natural size. The bowl was first treated with a rich deep red slip, on which the design was painted in a deeper red and black. The painting is very free, the design not being by any means symmetrical. The surface has a very high polish, almost comparable to glazing.
