Botanical Art by Georg Dionys Ehret (1708–1770)

9 October 1997 – 28 February 1998

These watercolors on paper and vellum were selected from the Institute's extensive collection of paintings by Georg Dionys Ehret (1708–1770). Born in Heidelberg and apprenticed as a gardener, Ehret moved to England to illustrate some of the 18th century's most sumptuous botanical color-plate works. His commissions were from wealthy patrons and from botanists; countesses and duchesses were among his pupils. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society (the only foreigner on the English list).
